Thaksin urges athletes to do their best in Busan

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday urged the Thai athletes to do their best for the name of the Kingdom in the forthcoming Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.

The Prime Minister made a speech to the 265 Thai athletes who met him to say goodbye and have blessings before their final preparations for the Asiad which starts on September 29.

The president of the Olympic Committee of Thailand (OCT), Gen Yuthasak Sasiprapa, reported that a total of 423 Thais, including 265 athletes and 158 officials, will make the trip to South Korea.

After the report, Mr Thaksin presented the national flag to the head of the Thai delegation, Maj Gen Charoek Ariratchakaran.

”The Government has always supported Thai sports it is the most important thing for the development of the country,” said Mr Thaksin. ”That's why we are setting up the new Sports Ministry.”

”Sports also make Thais healthy. It also helps us to work together as a team in the future. A fine example is our tennis star Paradorn Srichaphan who is doing very well at the moment. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all the Thai athletes good luck. The most important thing is for every athlete to do their best in their sports to bring home fame to the country. It is not just about winning gold medals, but also please show your sporting spirit and the smile which is the symbol of the Thai people. Although I cannot go to Korea I will watch the live telecast instead.”

The Prime Minister also mentioned the special bonus for the successful ones. ”A gold medal will mean one million baht just like the last time in the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok. This bonus is a special gifts from the Government.”
