at next Olympic Games

Antalya: The International Fencing Federation (FIE) finalized today the Program for the next Olympic Games in Athens. From 2004 Women’s Sabre will enter the Olympic Program. Thomas Bach, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Fencing Gold Medallist himself, assisted at the extraordinary congress in Turkey and pointed out that there would be no doubt that the number of competitions or the number of athletes could be improved.

As the IOC has set the limits for the Fencing with ten competitions and 200 athletes, the FIE had to redefine the detailed Program, which will be as follows:

The old formula was including 5 individual and 5 team events, without having Women’s Sabre included. The ten competitions for Athens will be split up into 6 Individual competitions and four Team events. Thomas Bach was satisfied that with this decision the Olympic Program for Athens can be now finalized. ”I believe that the Executive Board of the IOC will accept this decision on the next Meeting in May.”

The six Individual Competitions will be: Women’s Sabre, Women’s Foil, Women’s Epee, Men’s Sabre, Men’s Foil and Men’s Epee. The Participation for the Team event was determined by draw. Women’s Foil Team and Men’s Sabre Team will therefore not be at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, however there will be 24 Individuals competing for an Individual Olympic Title and United States of America and Hungary proposed to hold a Team World Championships for those weapons.
